“You ready to quit on me, yet?” Khayne questioned as we stepped onto a different elevator from the we had been riding all day. This one, he said, was his private elevator that he only used when the office was really busy, and he was trying to avoid being stopped a million times. After our interaction this morning, I thought it would be weird between us, but that wasn’t the case. As usual, Khayne was professional as ever during work hours.

“No chance! This is the most excitement I’ve had in months.” As soon as those words left my mouth, I wish I could take them back. I mean, they were honest, but I felt lame as hell saying them.

“You find running from meeting to meeting exciting or do you just think that’s what I want to hear?” He questioned while tugging on his full beard.

“Oh, one thing you will learn about me is, I am not that girl that says things just to impress you. If I said it, I meant it, no hidden motives.” I started as the elevator doors opened up and allowed us access into his office. “I know that it sounds lame to say it, but I am really enjoying the hustle and bustle of it all. When I learned that my first assignment through the temp agency was a long term assistant position at a law firm. I felt like it was a sign.” I finished.

“A sign of what?” He inquired as he took his seat behind his huge desk and motioned for me to take one also.

“It felt like a sign that I made the right decision when I decided to occupy my time with something productive. Initially, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so the temp agency crossed my mind. I figured I would do the compatibility tests and they would send me to a bunch of short-term jobs that would help me to get a feel for what I did or didn’t want to do, long term.”

“You over there talking like you are just getting out of jail and you’re trying to be rehabilitated or something.” He chuckled but I could see it in his eyes that he was really trying to see what my deal was.

“Or something. You know that I didn’t just get out of jail; the background check would have revealed that.” I responded.

“Right. It’s just the way you’re talking leads me to believe you’re starting over.” He pried.

“I guess you can say that I am. I haven’t worked a job in what feels like ever. But before I walked away from the work field, I had dreams of being an attorney. That’s why I said this felt like it was a sign and that I was excited to be in the midst of all of this. This is as close as I’ll get to becoming the female Johnny Cochrane, as I used to say, so trust me when I tell you that I am truly excited to be here.
